hi mumsy, sorry have been slack in the news department. email is v pricey

here. All is well, we are in Dubrovnik at the moment which is such a

beautiful city, hard to imagine it was under siege not so long ago. Rooms

here are expensive compared to what we were paying in Turks so we have been

renting private rooms from little old ladies who come and meet us at the

ports. The house we are staying in the moment has shell holes in it, which

is a bit of a spin-out. You just dont get shell damaged buildings in

collingwood....well perhaps around chopper's house you do...

The weather has been extremly hot the entire time we've been in Croatia.

38degrees most days. The locals are saying they've never seen it this hot in

June. Lucky us! It has made it hard to get out and see stuff..but it's great

swimming weather, the water is lovely and clear and there are plenty of

nuddists around to amuse us.

We will be heading back to ˇagreb in a couple of days picking up the c˛ech

visa and then onto Slovenia and C˛ech. On the road again!

Anyway better go and cool down somewhere!!!!

Also, most distraught about my pies. what's eddie doing??

lots and lots of love cara XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Hi mumsy - no news this tuesday? looking forward to hearing about your long

weekend? On the croatian island of hvar at the moment, the town itself is a

really lovely medievil town - a maze of tiny stone alleyways covered in

bouganvillia, painted shutters, geraniums, all things typically mediterrean.

Drawback is there are too many fatcat germans and other rich europeans

waving their euros around, and anchoring their 50ft yachts in order to take

a skinny dip. Not the most pleasant sight, but nonetheless source of much

amusement to myself and greg. Ah well. Cant have the world to myself i

guess....

Cant report much on the local cuisine as it is pricier here then we

anticipated. Have been living on fromage and bread. Saving up for a big

yummy dinner in a few days. Can report that the beer is cold and reasonably

priced though. Croatian wine is supposed to be better then quaffable, so

will be reporting back shortly. yet to bump into his holiness - will keep ma

eyes peeled.

keep

me updated!!! lots and lots of love - love caraXXXXX

hi mums - a quick one while in transit. back in ˛agreb now - spent last

night travelling on bus from Dubrovnik . trip from hell, the driver insisted

we all stay awake with him -   piped loud tinny euro pop through the

speakers all night - things spiralled out of control when he put on the

Grease soundtrack at  4am - John and Olivier sound even worse with

distortion. Anyhoos arrived here a bit dazed and confused at 6 this morning

trekked for 7km to pick up Greg's czech visa (he's holding me back with that

useless australian passport!!). Have booked a seat on a train - it leaves in

three hours for Lubljana. Greg is coming down with chest infection so has

decided his staying put at the station until then. Last seen, he was sprawl

out over platform 1 surrounded by backpacks and guide books,  calculater in

hand, trying to get his head around the slovenian currency rates. His good

like that.

Temperatures have dropped thankfully. Dubrovnik was hit by a wild electrical

storm on our last day there. It was spectacular. The city lost power for an

hour or so.

The bricks and colour scheme sound like a winner. Pity there are problems

with the two drawing guys. that's the last thing you need...tell them to get

their act together! Ros emailed me about meg's communion. I sent her a post

card wishing her a lovely day (i surprise myself sometimes!). Enjoy your big

one out and let me know what you decide with the job!

Better go and rescue greg, before he starts calculating how much the south

african rand has devalued in the last two years.  All my love Cara XXXXXXXXX

hello hello, here i sit manning the reception desk at the Ljubljana

university residences. Doing a good job aswell, have given a few sets of

keys out to students, very efficiently too. Perhaps I should look into a

career change? There's a big jazz festival in town at the moment, all the

hotels are booked out - we found the last bed in town here at the uni.

Since my last report, we've moved on from Bulgaria to Serbia to Croatia . Our

stop in Belgrade was quick but we enjoyed what we saw. The city was lovely

and peaceful, two rivers met in the middle of town which gave it a tranquil

atmosphere.  We didn't expect to see the bombed buildings and craters, they

were an eyeopener. Saw the houses of parliament where the people rioted and

brought down slobodan, that was really interesting. Croatia was beautiful

and relaxing, spent most of our time bobbing around in the adriatic. We were

hit by a heat wave while there so we couldn't do too much sight seeing, 38

degrees for an entire fortnight, stifling.  Dubrovnik was a highlight, the

town is an absolute gem and seems to have recovered well from the war,

although the house we stayed in still had some obvious shell damage which

again, was an eye-opener.

Ljubljana , Slovenia is very pleasant indeed. leafy, stately, young and

vibrant. Stumbled upon that Jazz fest and indulged in a couple of vinos and

a bit of chair dancing. Greg is asleep upstairs dealing with the flu. He can

sleep soundly though, with me on the reception desk making sure things are

running smoothly here at Ljubljana uni....

Making our way on to Bled then Czech tomorrow.

Take care all, hope you're well. Cara X

We are in czech republic at the moment and what a  saga it was to get here!

we opted to stop off in Austria on our way from Slovenia to Czech republic

as the train straight through was going to cost us a phenomenal amount of

money, we thought- no that can't be right? we can do it cheaper by stopping

off in Salzbourg. Yep, a disasterous decision!.There were no hostels

available and we had to fork out a heap of euros for a hotel, then got stung

10dollars for 2 cokes, then missed our connecting train to czech and had to

stay another night in Linz Austria and had to fork out again for an

expensive hotel there. Ahhhhhhhhh! we have spent a lifes savings in about 2

days!!! Now in czech and staying in very cheap hostels and drinking cheap

50cent beers - things are looking up! cesky kromlov is a beautiful midieveil

town, i haven't seen anything like it before - amazing.

Dad and mum, thanks for the cyber banter - it's almost like i'm there.

Still in Czech, we left Krumluv and headed to Prague for a few days, met up

with a New Zealand guy who travelled with us to a tiny town called Locket -

it was a delight - not a tour group in sight, relatively undiscovered by the

hoards. Locket's first hostel had been opened up two weeks previously, so we

were one of the first groups of crusty backpackers to stench up their bunk

beds...my goodness we smell. Tried to leave Czech yesterday for Amsterdam ,

unable to find a bus, so we are stranded here in Karlovy Vary for a few

days. Not a bad place to be stuck. Found a gem of a hostel, also new. A

whole apartment to ourselves, double bed, kitchen, loungeroom, wonderful

bathroom, big soft towels, sauna available... all for a measly 12 aust

dollars each! So nervous I am going spoil the starched white doona with my

backpacker aroma, my goodness I smell.

Karlovy Vary is a beautiful old spa town currently hosting an international

film festival, in league with carnnes and sundance, according to the locals.

Sadly it seems we will miss the celebrations which start tomorrow night as

we'll be on the bus heading to the netherlands . Time is running out for us

here in Europe , we're sceduled to fly out from Dublin in 10days. Fair bit of

territory to cover between now and then..enough to make my head spin, and

bottom ache in anticipation of all that bus travel...

The progress on the house seems to be slow. Do you still think you'll be in

by Christmas?

Better go - love to you both and the boys. Hopefully will talk to you

tomorrow!

Love Cara XXXXXXXXXXXXX
